If you're willing to use an experimental package, rtfeldman/elm-sorter-experiment is the one you want to pick. This library facilitates using opaque types as keys in a dict or as members of set, freeing you to model your data how you'd like to.
Personal plug: use tesk9/palette to model and modify colors, and to generate beautiful color palettes.
